The Challenge 🧩
Our Engineering team has experienced significant growth in recent years, and we are seeking a Director of Engineering who will play a key role in supporting various initiatives, including the expansion of our product into new markets such as Italy and Portugal. Working closely with our VP of Engineering, Engineering Directors, and CTO, you will be responsible for ensuring the successful scalability of our tribes and topic teams. You will lead 1 to 2 tribes, each comprising 2 to 5 cross-functional teams. Each team will be led by an Engineering Manager overseeing a group of 8 to 9 engineers.
You will be instrumental in driving the technical strategy and fostering the growth and development of our cross-functional teams. Your leadership will play a key role in delivering value to our users, shaping the company's direction, and cultivating a culture of learning through experimentation and embracing failure. What You Will Do 👇
- Develop and execute the technical strategy aligned with our overall goals, ensuring it supports our vision.
- Lead, develop, and mentor Engineering Managers and Tech Leads.
- Encourage a culture of continuous learning, experimentation, and risk-taking, where team members are inspired to innovate and embrace challenges.
- Ensure that as our Engineering team scales, we preserve and enhance our engineering culture.
- Assist your tribe in attracting, recruiting, and training engineers.
- Build teams that develop software using modern engineering approaches and agile principles.
What We’re Looking For 🔎
- Proven track record of inspiring and leading engineering teams, providing guidance and mentorship to Engineering Managers and Tech Leads.
- Experience in Agile methodologies, enabling teams to deliver high-quality software in a fast-paced environment.
- Data-driven mindset and proficiency in utilizing key metrics, such as Lead time, Deployment frequency, MTTR, and Failure rate, to drive informed decision-making.
- Ability to operate at both tactical and strategic levels, aligning engineering initiatives with the broader organizational strategy.
- Excellent communication skills, empowering you to collaborate effectively with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and at all levels, and to articulate complex technical concepts.
What Would Be A Plus 🚀
- Experience leading cross-functional teams with a focus on mobile development.
- Previous exposure to Tribes & Squads.
Do note that all our jobs are 📍 Barcelona based. We work in a mostly remote capacity offering great flexibility to our employees, but we believe in the power of getting together regularly in our office. As a first iteration, we expect a 4+ day/month office attendance for which the specifics are decided on a team level.

What does the hiring process for this position look like? **Please, note that all interviews take place remotely over hangouts.**
Intro Call - run by talent acquisition, focus on providing more information about the role and the company as well as going over your experience, motivation, and expectations. This usually takes 45-60 minutes.
Technical Task - you will prepare a practical case to present in order to assess the skills required for the role.
Expertise Interview - run by the core team, focus on the hard skills and the ability to deliver in a given context. This usually takes 60-90 minutes.
Stakeholder Interview - run by the hiring team and relevant stakeholders, focus on the ability to collaborate & deliver in a cross-functional set-up, as well as on leadership skills aligned with the role requirements. This usually takes 60 minutes.
Culture-Add Interview - run by culture interviewers, focus on adherence to Wallapop's purpose and business proposition. This usually takes 60 minutes.
Offer - should you be the right candidate, your offer will be discussed over a call with talent acquisition and will then be confirmed in writing.
