Hardware Engineer, Manufacturing
Other Engineering
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Monumental is automating on-site construction with robotics and software. Our mission is to make construction software-defined and autonomous - a future where beautiful, bespoke buildings go up in a single day, with minimal labour.
We're a growing team of engineers, operators and technicians from companies like Palantir, Qualcomm, Dyson, Shopify, Tesla, Meta, WaveOptics and Google DeepMind. It's still the early days of building the company, and this is a chance to make an outsized impact on a problem that matters. From day one, you’ll be working with an experienced founding team backed by top-tier investors.
Monumental is based in the city centre of Amsterdam, in a beautiful facility with a fully equipped workshop and robot testing floor. We build the whole stack in-house - hardware and software. We're explicitly not a hybrid or remote-first company - you can't build robots or walls from home, so we're onsite five days a week.

About the role
Monumental are already deploying robots into the real world at scale, building beautiful, bespoke homes. Our robots are on sites across the Netherlands and the UK and will be in the US within a year. Every deployment teaches us something about our hardware; you’ll push our R&D fleet to become one ready for large-series production: you'll own taking us from tens of robots a year to hundreds, and then thousands. You'll also keep that growing fleet deployable, and making design changes yourself to improve reliability and serviceability.
Scaling a fleet means solving whatever is in the way: limited space, no clear production process, lead times we can't live with and modules that don't survive the harsh conditions of a construction site. You’ll be expected to wear many hats; we’re looking for people who are genuinely excited to lead these efforts.
Our robots are built from modules at every level of maturity, so expect to work with the hardware R&D team at early stages of development to validate R&D designs as fast as we can. In parallel, you'll be in the workshop determining how we assemble them: the processes, the fixtures, the production space itself, getting the very best out of our Amsterdam facilities.

What you'll do
Bottom line, you'll own increasing our quarterly production from 30 sets of robot systems to 100 within a year. This is a challenge. You'll be building the production capabilities at Monumental rather than inheriting them, and you'll do it alongside engineers and technicians who care a great deal about getting this right.
Take prototypes through to production-ready modules. Find and address design flaws, validate improvements, and push these modules to production.
Assembling modules, understand the friction slowing production, and address issues yourself along with the hardware team.
Develop fixtures, jigs and light automation solutions to support module assembly.
Find production processes that bring minimal value when done in-house. Work with external suppliers to outsource them, while maintaining production quality.
-
Produce drawings, assembly instructions and quality checks to make sure our modules are integrated together and our robots are brought up with no errors.
What we're looking for
Industry experience, ideally in a VC-backed start-up, transitioning products from prototype to production
Hands-on, analytical mindset: skilled at building assemblies, running studies, analysing data, solving production and quality issues, and collaborating with technicians to implement and validate improvements
Proficiency in mechanical assembly (press fits, fastener selection, harness, etc.)
Strong knowledge of GD&T and producing 3D and 2D drawings
Experience creating structured process documentation (work instructions, SOPs, quality checklists)
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Nice-to-haves
BSc in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent
Familiarity with robotics or complex electromechanical systems
Experience with ERP tools (Odoo or similar)
