About CuspAI
CuspAI is the frontier AI company on a mission to solve the breakthrough materials needed to power human progress. While nature took billions of years to perfect molecules, we are harnessing AI to unlock trillion-dollar materials breakthroughs in months, not millennia. Our founding team is the most cited in the world, comprised of world-class researchers in AI, chemistry and engineering.
We are working on some of the hardest and most important challenges including energy, clean water, the future of compute, and carbon capture, and this is just the start of what our 'search engine' for next-generation materials will unlock.
We invite you to be part of a diverse, innovative team at the intersection of AI and materials science, working to create impactful partnerships that drive innovation, scalability, and industry collaboration. This work matters. Your work matters.
We’re on the cusp of the on-demand materials era. Join us.
The Role
As our first dedicated Business Intelligence Engineer, you will build the foundations of CuspAI’s analytics infrastructure which transforms diverse data streams into automated, reliable, self-service insights that guide strategic and operational decisions.
We generate data across finance, cloud infrastructure, R&D workflows, and business development. Rather than producing manual reports, you will design scalable systems that enable teams to explore insights independently and eliminate repetitive analysis across the company.
This role reports to the Chief of Staff, working closely with Research, Engineering, Finance and Commercial teams.
Your Impact
You will create CuspAI’s single source of truth for core business metrics, enabling faster, data-driven decisions across the organisation. Your work will surface insights to power resource allocation, cost optimisation, and operational visibility as we scale and will evolve into a core part of our internal infrastructure.
This is not a traditional reporting role. We value builders who:
Think automation-first, including building and/or utilising AI/ML agents
Design reusable and scalable systems rather than one-off outputs
Enjoy translating complexity into clarity
Thrive in ambiguity, proactively seeking out the information you need
What You Will Do
Build Automated Analytics Infrastructure
Design and maintain data pipelines aggregating metrics from cloud platforms, project management systems, software systems, financial systems, CRM platforms and various internal systems.
Create real-time dashboards for various internal and external audiences that will be used across the business, e.g. Board meetings, internal presentations, project documentation, etc. This would include self-documenting data models that refresh without manual intervention.
Develop semantic layers translating technical metrics into business-relevant KPIs and insights (e.g. compute hours, storage costs, workflow success rates, and more).
Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and anomaly detection to ensure accuracy and trust.
AI-Augmented Analytics
Leverage AI tools to automate report generation and accelerate discovery and sharing of insights.
Analyse and extract structured meaning from unstructured sources (documents, communications, research notes).
Enable proactive insight surfacing as well as natural-language querying where appropriate.
Build predictive models for resource utilisation, project costs, and capacity planning.
Cross-Functional Insight Enablement
Connect disparate systems via APIs, automated exports, or other methods to provide comprehensive operational visibility.
Identify tracked and untracked metrics that could drive business value and implement new measurement frameworks.
Partner with teams to define shared metric definitions and ensure consistent reporting.
Reduce repeated manual work across the organisation through systematic automation.
Must Have Skills and Qualifications:
Experience building automated analytics solutions end-to-end in a similar role (e.g. Analytics Engineer, Business Intelligence Developer or Engineer).
Expert knowledge of at least one BI platform (e.g. Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Grafana, etc.).
Strong data visualisation skills with proven experience designing clear, actionable dashboards.
Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses and third party data sources.
Advanced SQL and an ability to build/configure APIs, write code, use libraries, etc. as needed to ingest data from a wide variety of internal data sources and systems.
With a systematic mindset, you think in terms of creating repeatable, scalable, maintainable solutions rather than one-off quick fixes.
Ability to understand and translate the various needs and requirements of highly technical (ML researchers, platform engineers, scientists), commercial, and business stakeholders.
Bonus Points (But Not Critical):
Experience with ETL (Extract Transform Load) and data processing applications (e.g. Dataform, Fivetran, Airbyte, Stitch, etc.).
Familiarity with scientific research workflows, experiment tracking, or MLOps metrics.
Experience with forecasting finance, cost optimisation strategies, business processes, operations, etc.
Comfort using AI coding assistants to accelerate development.
Additional Considerations
This role would ideally be based in our Cambridge or London offices with the expectation of being in the office three days per week. Amsterdam and Berlin can also be considered, as long as you are willing to travel to the UK frequently.
What We Offer
A competitive salary plus equity package so you have a stake in the success of the company
28 days holiday
Professional development budget for scientific conferences and technical training
Opportunity to work at the forefront of AI-driven scientific discovery with world-class researchers
Direct impact on advancing materials science through cutting-edge technology
Collaborative environment bridging AI research, computational chemistry, and experimental science
Join us in shaping the future of materials with AI. Together, we can create groundbreaking solutions for a more sustainable world.
